How can we strengthen the Internet for free expression and innovation?

Challenge Brief

This is an open call for ideas. We want to discover projects that make the Internet better. We believe that access to information is key to vibrant and successful communities, and we want the Internet to remain an open, equitable platform for free expression, commerce and learning. We want an Internet that fuels innovation through the creation and sharing of ideas.

We don’t have specific projects in mind that we’re hoping to see in response to our question. Instead, we want this challenge to attract a range of approaches. In addition to technologies, we’re open to ideas focused on journalism, policy, research, education-- any innovative project that results in a stronger Internet.

So we want to know what you think-- what captures your imagination when you think about the Internet as a place for free expression and innovation? In June we will award $2.75 million, including $250,000 from the Ford Foundation, to support the most compelling ideas.

I want to thank you for this challenge. And while that sounds incredibly self-serving, it is not intended as so. As a longtime journalist I know there were always chasms in the world of feedback, like when you do a good thing or when a story is right, so I just want to say that for us at Young Writers Project, this has been a powerful experience -- just in applying, seeing our community react, receiving some great questions and offers of collaboration and then viewing all the imaginative and committed folks out there working so hard for good and who've put some powerful proposal together in this space. So thanks for stimulating a positive experience.

What we need is news-websites-in-a-box.
There are good open source solutions out there, like Drupal's Open Publish. But I think Knight Foundation could do better with Drupal.

Hey Tran, We actually are in the works of doing that. Its built on Drupal, but we re-built the UX/UI for quick, simple, and effective publishing. Contact me at misha@openreporter.org and Ill let you know when we push it out.

Felicito a la fundación Knight. Ya participo en el proyecto de Guadalupe Lizárraga y me siento orgulloso de ello.
